DES MOINES, Iowa – The city of Des Moines faced its fourth traffic-related fatality, with the third involving a motorcycle, on a tragic Sunday afternoon. The Des Moines Police Department reported that a collision between a motorcycle and a Jeep occurred at the intersection of East 16th Street and East University Avenue around 2 p.m. The motorcyclist, a 41-year-old man from Des Moines, sustained critical injuries and was rushed by Des Moines Fire Department medics to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities disclosed that the rider of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet, as indicated in the DMPD release. The initial investigation revealed that the 2004 Honda motorcycle was travelling eastbound on East University Avenue, while a 2016 Jeep driven by a 61-year-old Des Moines woman was heading westbound on the same street. The collision occurred as the Jeep attempted a left turn onto East 16th Street, resulting in the motorcycle crashing into the side of the vehicle.

Although no charges have been filed or citations issued at this point, the DMPD mentioned that failure to yield and excessive speed might have been contributing factors to the tragic accident. Data from the Iowa Department of Transportation revealed that 58 individuals have lost their lives on Iowa roads this year, which is 15 fewer compared to the same period in 2023.
