Police said four people were shot near Lindsay and Brown roads late Sunday.
MESA, AZ — Two people were killed and two others were wounded Sunday night after gunfire broke out in a Mesa neighborhood near Lindsay and Brown roads, police said.
The shooting drew a large police and fire response to an East Valley residential area around 8 p.m. June 28. Mesa police said officers were sent to the scene after several 911 calls reported gunfire. Homicide detectives remained in the area Monday as they collected evidence and worked to determine what led to the shooting.
According to Mesa Detective Laura Cervantes, officers arrived and found four people suffering from gunshot wounds. Two of them were pronounced dead. The two surviving victims were injured by gunfire, but police had not released an update on their conditions by Monday morning. The names and ages of the victims were not released, pending family notification and further investigation.
Mesa police described the case as an isolated incident and said there was no continuing threat to the community. Police also said no officers fired their weapons during the incident. “The scene remains active, and we ask the public to avoid the area while first responders continue their work,” Mesa police said as detectives and other first responders worked near the intersection.
The shooting happened near a busy part of Mesa bordered by homes, schools, parks and commercial areas. Lindsay and Brown roads sit in the city’s eastern half, where residential streets connect with larger roads used by commuters moving through the East Valley. Police did not immediately say whether the gunfire happened inside a home, outside on a street or in another nearby location.
Investigators had not said Monday whether any arrests had been made or whether they were searching for a suspect. Police also had not released a possible motive, the number of weapons involved or whether the four people who were shot knew one another. Detectives were expected to review physical evidence, 911 calls, witness statements and any nearby video as they built a timeline of the shooting.
The case remains under investigation by Mesa homicide detectives. Police said the area was active as investigators worked through the scene, but they did not announce a broader public safety threat. The next major update is expected to include victim identifications, survivor conditions or new details on what happened before the shooting.
