OCEAN CITY, NJ – A New Jersey man has been arrested and charged with murder, following the reported decapitation of his 74-year-old mother. Jeffrey Surgent, 46, of Ocean City, reportedly called the police spontaneously around 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8, stating that he was diagnosed with mental health illnesses and informing them about the murder he had committed.
Once the police arrived at the scene, they found Alexandria Surgent dead, and her son Jeffrey, covered in blood and naked, on top of the decapitated body of his mother in an apartment hallway. The head was discovered a few feet away, as stated in court documents.
WPVI disclosed that the apartment complex forms part of the Ocean City Housing Authority and is equipped with security camera systems. The investigators utilized the surveillance footage, which reportedly showed the head being tossed out from the apartment. Surgent was then seen dragging his mother’s body into the hallway, as mentioned in reports of the disturbing incident.
Court documents detailed that upon the arrival of the police, Surgent repeatedly expressed apologies for killing his mother. He was also reportedly heard singing “Jesus Loves Me” while being taken into custody.
The prosecutors’ press release highlighted that Surgent had been charged with first-degree murder. Currently, the suspect is being detained at a “secure medical facility.”
