Nine-year-old found dead in burning car, dad arrested

SAYREVILLE, NJ – A New Jersey man has been charged with aggravated arson following the grim discovery of his 9-year-old son in a burning car, as stated by authorities. Late on Thursday evening, police responded to a fire incident in Sayreville where they encountered Manuel Rivera, 43, near a burning vehicle. Rivera was seen bearing burn injuries and a self-inflicted wound, according to various media outlets. The specifics of his self-inflicted wound remain unclarified.

The vehicle was reportedly doused in gasoline, and upon investigating, authorities discovered the lifeless body of Rivera’s son inside. As per reports, there was simultaneous police involvement in a domestic dispute at a local residence.

Statements from a woman at the scene allege that Rivera secretly left with their son following their disagreement that evening. Local prosecutors suggest that Rivera then proceeded to drive his son to a local high school, setting the car ablaze nearby.

Citing official sources, several media outlets have reported Rivera’s charge of aggravated arson, with the possibility of additional charges pending the child’s autopsy results.

On Friday, a statement released by Sayreville Public Schools expressed their “great shock and sorrow” over the tragic death of a student in the car fire. It was also revealed that the child’s father, Rivera, was an employee of Sayreville Public Schools. Further details were not divulged due to the ongoing investigation.

As of Friday afternoon, Rivera was hospitalized with no news regarding his legal representation.
