WASHBURN, Maine – A former police officer in Washburn is facing charges after allegedly fabricating information related to a missing-person case. The ex-Washburn Police Sgt. Chandler Cole has been accused of various crimes, including falsifying a report claiming he had taken the missing individual to a hospital, as per court records. Cole has since resigned from his position.
According to authorities, the incident dates back to March 30 when a distressed individual, Erik Foote, was reported missing. Cole asserted that he had transported Foote to a convenience store, but he informed Foote’s parents that he had taken him to a hospital. However, an investigation uncovered discrepancies in Cole’s account, determining that he manipulated his report to indicate a hospital drop-off without any supporting evidence from the hospital.
Despite ongoing searches within the community of 1,500 residents, Foote remains unlocated, heightening concerns among locals. The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation in light of the situation.
In the wake of these events, Washburn is contemplating the future of its police department. With the retirement of the police chief in January and Cole’s resignation in February, the town is currently lacking in police presence, with a younger officer seeking employment elsewhere. Town Manager Donna Turner disclosed that the Sheriff’s Office is temporarily providing coverage until a decision is made regarding the police department’s continuation.
