Officer killed in semi-truck hit-and-run

SANTAQUIN, UT – A Utah police officer tragically lost his life early Sunday following an alleged hit-and-run incident involving a semi-truck driver. The officer, who was conducting a traffic stop at the time, has been identified as Santaquin Police Sgt. Bill Hooser, 50.

Described as a “top-notch officer” and a hero, Hooser was lauded by colleagues and family during a heartfelt press conference on Monday. Santaquin Police Chief Rod Hurst expressed his grief, stating that Hooser was an exceptional officer who was “really squared away.”

Hooser leaves behind a loving family, including his wife of 29 years, two daughters, and a granddaughter. His brother, Michael, expressed the family’s devastation and gratitude for the community’s support, stating, “Nothing could ever make up for the loss we feel. We take comfort in knowing Bill died a hero, doing the job he loved, serving people he loved.”

The late officer began his law enforcement career eight years ago as an unpaid volunteer. He initially served with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office in New Mexico before returning to his native Utah to join the Santaquin Police Department. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant earlier this year.

The incident that led to Hooser’s untimely death occurred while he was assisting a Utah Highway Patrol trooper with a traffic stop on a big rig along Interstate 15. The driver of the truck, identified as 41-year-old Michael Aaron Jayne, allegedly fled the scene, striking Hooser, his vehicle, and a UHP patrol vehicle in the process. Hooser sadly died at the scene.

Jayne was later apprehended near Vernal, Utah, following a short pursuit. He was found driving a stolen pickup truck, which he allegedly acquired after a series of vehicle thefts. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
