Old man killed in brutal storm by falling tree

CLAYTON COUNTY, GA – Severe winds and storms tearing through metro Atlanta on Tuesday morning led to a fatal accident. Herbert Lee Williams, a 78-year-old Fayetteville resident, lost his life when a tree was toppled by the storm. The tree crushed his car near the intersection of Highway 54/Fayetteville Road and Jenni Lane.

According to the Clayton County Police, Williams was driving eastbound on the highway alone when the tree fell onto his vehicle and killed him instantly. The incident has highlighted the devastating aftermath of the violent storms and winds sweeping across the region.

These harsh weather conditions have led to a level 1 risk for severe storms along the areas south and east of the I-85 corridor. The risk level ups to 2 in the more southern areas, including Putnam, Butts, Jasper, Pike, Lamar, and Upson counties.

While tornado warnings may have expired, residents are urged by meteorologists to stay safe in the midst of the brutal storm. They are particularly being cautioned against moderately flooded roads and storm-damaged areas, where the danger of falling trees is still a threat to peoples’ safety.

The specifics of the incident are still under investigation. More information is expected to be publically released as investigators continue their work.
