The standoff began after police tracked a man with a felony warrant to a home near 145th and Shirley streets.
OMAHA, NE — A suspect is dead following an hours-long barricade situation in west Omaha that began Sunday evening after police tracked a man wanted on a felony warrant to a residential neighborhood, according to Omaha police.
The incident unfolded near 145th and Shirley streets after officers first encountered the man around 7 p.m. Sunday in the area of 30th and Cuming streets. Police said officers recognized that the driver had a felony warrant and contacted the department’s Able-1 helicopter to follow his vehicle.
According to police, the man began driving erratically after noticing officers. Police did not immediately attempt a traffic stop, and the helicopter continued tracking the vehicle as it traveled across Omaha. Authorities said the man eventually stopped near 145th and Shirley streets, left the vehicle and entered a home.
A woman who had been inside the residence escaped and told officers that the man had pointed a gun at her and forced her out of the house, police said. Authorities said no one else was believed to be inside the home with the suspect.
Omaha police called in the SWAT team and crisis negotiators as officers established a perimeter around the neighborhood. Police said negotiators were able to communicate with the suspect during the barricade. A large law enforcement presence remained in the area for several hours while officers worked to resolve the situation.
Police later said the suspect was dead following the barricade. Authorities had not released the man’s name in the information available early Monday, and details about how he died had not been independently confirmed. Police also had not announced whether any officers fired their weapons during the incident.
The confrontation brought a heavy police response to the west Omaha neighborhood Sunday night. Residents reported seeing numerous law enforcement vehicles and a police helicopter in the area as officers restricted access around the scene. Those accounts helped document the scale of the response but did not establish how the suspect died.
Earlier in the incident, Omaha police said no injuries had been reported and that the woman who left the home was safely outside. Police had described the suspect as armed and said officers believed he was alone inside the residence.
The circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death remain under investigation. Police had not released additional information about the felony warrant, the suspect’s identity or the final moments of the standoff as of early Monday.
