Authorities said two children and four adults were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital after the Saturday evening collision.
DANIA BEACH, FL — One person died and six others were injured Saturday evening after a multi-vehicle crash on East Dania Beach Boulevard, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue officials.
The crash drew a large emergency response on July 4 in the 200 block of East Dania Beach Boulevard, a busy corridor east of Federal Highway and near Southeast Second Avenue. Officials said the injured included four adults and two pediatric patients. All six were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital as trauma alerts. Their conditions had not been released late Saturday.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crews responded after reports of a crash involving several vehicles. When rescue workers arrived, they found six injured people at the scene and one additional person who was pronounced dead there. Deputies had not released the person’s name, age or hometown. Officials also had not said how many vehicles were involved or whether any driver would face a citation or charge.
Surveillance video reported from the area showed a white BMW convertible traveling on East Dania Beach Boulevard before it lost control near Southeast Second Avenue. The vehicle crossed the median, struck a sign and collided head-on with a Mercedes traveling in the opposite direction. Authorities had not publicly confirmed the sequence shown in the video or said what caused the BMW to leave its lane.
The crash happened on a holiday evening as people across South Florida were heading to and from Independence Day events. East Dania Beach Boulevard connects neighborhoods, businesses and beach traffic near the city’s downtown area. The road also carries vehicles moving between U.S. 1 and the beach, making a major crash there likely to slow traffic and draw attention from nearby residents and visitors.
A witness identified as Maya said she heard the impact after arriving at a nearby home. “We were in the car then we got to the house then we got upstairs,” she said. “When we got upstairs, we just heard a boom.” She said she later saw the BMW near the crash scene. Officials did not release additional witness accounts Saturday night.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash. Deputies had not said whether speed, impairment, distraction, mechanical failure or roadway conditions were being reviewed as possible factors. No arrest had been announced. The medical examiner’s office is expected to determine the official cause and manner of death after the victim is identified and relatives are notified.
Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood received all six injured patients, officials said. The hospital is one of Broward County’s major trauma centers and regularly receives patients from serious crashes in the county. Authorities described the six transports as trauma alerts, a term used when emergency crews believe injuries may be serious enough to require rapid specialized care.
By late Saturday, officials had released only limited information. The dead person had not been identified, the injured patients’ conditions remained unknown and investigators had not announced a timeline for releasing more findings.
