One Killed, Six Wounded in Solano Town Center Shooting

Police said the shooting inside a Spirit Halloween store appeared targeted, with three of the surviving victims in critical condition.

FAIRFIELD, CA — One person was killed and six others were wounded Friday night in a shooting inside a Spirit Halloween store at Solano Town Center, police said, prompting a large emergency response and an ongoing search for the person responsible.

Fairfield police responded to reports of gunfire at about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 30. Authorities said all seven victims suffered gunshot wounds. One person died, while six others were taken to hospitals for treatment. At least three of the surviving victims were in critical condition. Police had not publicly identified the victims as of Saturday afternoon.

Investigators said Saturday that the shooting appeared to have been targeted and involved one suspect. Police had not released a description of the shooter or announced an arrest. Authorities also had not disclosed a possible motive or explained what led to the gunfire inside the seasonal Halloween store.

The shooting happened on the eve of Halloween as shoppers were visiting the mall and the Spirit Halloween store for costumes and decorations. Witnesses described hearing gunfire and seeing people flee or hide as officers and other emergency personnel converged on the shopping center. Police searched the area and interviewed people who were inside or near the store.

Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said investigators planned to review surveillance video from the mall as they worked to determine what happened and identify the shooter. Detectives were also gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses. Police said there was no continuing threat to the public after the immediate response, though officials urged residents to remain alert.

The FBI’s Sacramento office sent an Evidence Response Team to assist Fairfield police with the investigation. Other agencies also helped with the response, including law enforcement officers who assisted with searches, traffic control and securing areas around the shopping center.

Solano Town Center remained open Saturday, but the mall canceled its planned Halloween trick-or-treating event following the shooting. The shopping center, located along Travis Boulevard in Fairfield, has more than 130 stores and restaurants and had advertised the family-oriented Halloween event for Saturday afternoon.

The shooting drew particular attention because it happened inside a Spirit Halloween store during one of the retailer’s busiest periods of the year. Authorities have not released information indicating that the store itself was the motive for the attack. Police have described the shooting as targeted but have not publicly explained who was targeted or why.

As of Saturday afternoon, investigators had not announced an arrest, released the victims’ identities or provided a motive. Fairfield police continued working to identify the shooter and determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
