AUCKLAND, New Zealand – A frightful incident at Auckland International Airport on March 11, 2024, left dozens of passengers injured after a flight from Australia to New Zealand experienced a sudden “technical event.” According to witnesses, the incident caused a jarring movement within the aircraft, resulting in passengers being thrown around the cabin.
Approximately 50 individuals were attended to for injuries upon arrival in Auckland, with one person in serious condition, as reported by emergency medical service provider Hato Hone St John Ambulance. Out of the injured, 12 patients were sent to the hospital for further treatment.
Affected passengers and crew members received immediate help and medical evaluation at the airport, according to a statement from LATAM Airlines. The statement confirmed that Flight LA800, operating from Sydney to Auckland, encountered a technical issue during the flight, which led to the sudden movement.
The cause of the technical event was not specified in the statement provided by the airline. Aviation officials in Chile have announced that investigations will be conducted in New Zealand regarding this incident on a Chilean Boeing 787 that resulted in injuries to 50 passengers.
Chile’s Directorate General of Civil Aeronautics expressed regret over the situation and emphasized their commitment to the safety of air operations. Additionally, Chile’s aviation agency will be sending a representative to New Zealand to participate in the investigation.
In response to the incident, New Zealand’s equivalent of the National Transportation Safety Board is assessing the situation and gathering information to determine if an inquiry is needed. Boeing, the manufacturer of the aircraft involved, stated that they are working to gather more information about the incident to provide support as necessary.
Passengers who experienced the ordeal described a harrowing experience, with one individual mentioning a “mid-air drop” and others recounting people flying through the cabin during the sudden movement. Medical crews were on standby to provide assistance to those with injuries once the plane safely landed.
