Police investigated new gunfire Monday after a series of weekend shootings killed two people and wounded several others across the city.
PHILADELPHIA, PA — Gun violence continued in Philadelphia on Monday after a weekend marked by multiple shootings that killed two people and wounded several others, including teenagers, as detectives investigated separate attacks across several neighborhoods.
A man was hospitalized after being shot Monday morning in North Philadelphia, according to police. Officers responding around 9:20 a.m. to the 900 block of West Dauphin Street found the wounded man and took him to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. Police had not announced an arrest or released details about what led to the shooting as the investigation continued.
Later Monday, another shooting turned deadly in the East Mount Airy area. A woman was shot shortly after 2 p.m. on the 6300 block of Stenton Avenue, police said. She was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities had not released her identity or identified a motive, and no arrest had been announced by Monday evening.
The Monday shootings followed a violent stretch that began on Halloween night. Police said six separate shootings between Saturday evening and early Sunday left two people dead and five others wounded. Four teenagers were among those shot. The incidents unfolded in neighborhoods including Port Richmond, West Philadelphia and sections of North and Northeast Philadelphia.
One of the victims was a 15-year-old boy who was fatally shot shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday at a gas station on Richmond Street near Castor Avenue in Port Richmond. Police said the teenager had been with a group of other young people before an argument involving an adult man. The teen was wounded and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Police took a 40-year-old man into custody after the shooting and recovered a firearm. Authorities had not publicly identified a motive beyond the reported dispute.
A second person was killed early Sunday during a double shooting on the 6000 block of Osage Avenue, police said. Officers responding around 1:36 a.m. found an adult man with multiple gunshot wounds, and medics pronounced him dead at the scene. A woman was also wounded and hospitalized in stable condition. Other shootings overnight left a 17-year-old boy critically injured on Emerald Street and a 29-year-old man critically injured after he approached police near K Street and Erie Avenue.
The violence continued Sunday evening near SEPTA’s 56th Street Station in West Philadelphia. Police said a 14-year-old boy and two men, ages 25 and 26, were shot around 6:44 p.m. near the 5600 block of Market Street. The teenager and the 25-year-old were hospitalized in stable condition, while the 26-year-old was listed in critical condition. Police said they had not determined who the shooter was targeting.
SEPTA temporarily closed the 56th Street Station during the investigation before reopening it Monday morning. A SEPTA spokesperson said evidence indicated the gunfire originated outside the station, although one wounded person entered the station area after being struck. Investigators recovered shell casings from the street and reviewed surveillance video as they worked to determine what happened.
No arrest had been announced in the Sunday evening triple shooting, and police had not released a suspect description. The Monday North Philadelphia and East Mount Airy shootings also remained under investigation. The incidents were being investigated separately, and authorities had not announced evidence connecting them.
