PlayStation Stars Program Meltdown Leaves Gamers Waiting: What Went Wrong?

Los Angeles, California – PlayStation Stars, Sony’s unique rewards program in the PlayStation 5 era, has been facing technical issues since the beginning of June. The program allows users to earn coins to purchase games on PSN and collect virtual figurines within the PlayStation app. However, users have been unable to access the program due to persistent glitches.

Initially launched as an overhaul of PlayStation Rewards in 2022, PlayStation Stars offered players the opportunity to earn coins through game purchases or by completing specific challenges. These challenges ranged from playing certain types of games to collecting bespoke virtual collectibles, including nods to PlayStation’s history and branded collaborations like Spider-Man Adidas.

The problems with PlayStation Stars began surfacing around June 6, with users encountering error messages when attempting to access the program through the PlayStation mobile app. Despite ongoing promotions tied to the program and the mid-year Play Days sale event, Sony has yet to address the issues affecting PlayStation Stars, leaving users unable to utilize the rewards and collectibles they have earned.

As the outage extends beyond 25 days, users on the PlayStation Stars subreddit have drawn parallels to the lengthy 2011 PSN outage caused by a cyberattack. While the PlayStation Stars program does not involve monetary transactions and serves a smaller user base, the prolonged technical difficulties have left players frustrated and uncertain about the program’s future.

Sony’s lack of communication regarding the PlayStation Stars issues has only added to the confusion and frustration among users. The company has remained silent on the exact nature of the problem and when the rewards program is expected to be operational again, failing to provide clarity or reassurance to its dedicated player base.
