Tokyo, Japan – Prime Video is set to release a new live-action series adaptation of SEGA’s popular game franchise “Yakuza Like a Dragon.” The six-part crime-suspense-action series, titled “Like a Dragon,” is directed by Take Masaharu and Takimoto Kengo, with Takeuchi Ryoma starring as the lead character, Kiryu Kazuma.
The series will be available on Prime Video in two batches of three episodes each on October 25 and November 1, featuring both subtitled and dubbed versions in 30 languages. The storyline of “Like a Dragon” spans two time periods, 1995 and 2005, exploring the life and decisions of a Yakuza warrior known for his strong sense of justice, duty, and humanity.
Originally released in 2005 by SEGA, the “Yakuza” game series garnered massive fanfare and popularity among adult audiences. The live-action adaptation aims to depict the intense lives of gangsters and residents in the fictional entertainment district of Kamurochō, modeled after the real-life Kabukichō in Shinjuku.
According to Prime Video, the series promises to showcase modern Japan and delve into the dramatic stories of characters like the legendary Kazuma Kiryu in ways that previous games have not explored. The production of “Like a Dragon” is handled by The Fool, with Erik Barmack, Roberto Grande, and Joshua Long serving as executive producers.
Director Take expressed his dedication to the series, stating, “I have poured out my heart, soul, and experience of over 35 years into ‘Like a Dragon: Yakuza.'” The adaptation has attracted attention for its unique charm and compelling narrative, drawing on the international popularity and deep characters of the game franchise.
Yokoyama Masayoshi, head of Ryugagotoku Studio and executive producer, highlighted the challenges and rewards of adapting the beloved “Yakuza” series into a live-action format. He emphasized the captivating storytelling and gritty realism of the show, which is expected to engage both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
