Matteson, Illinois – Residents and businesses were temporarily evacuated following a freight train derailment in Matteson on Thursday morning. The incident, which occurred at the intersection of 217th Street and Main, led to concerns about a potential leak from the affected train cars.

Authorities issued a mandatory evacuation order for those living and working near the derailment site. Both the company and local officials assured the public that there was no longer a threat to public safety.

Matteson Mayor Sheila Chalmers-Currin addressed the situation during a press conference, stating that the risk had been mitigated and there was no ongoing danger to the public.
