The university had warned the students that they would face suspension and could be barred from completing the semester if they did not comply with the order by 2 p.m. on Monday.
Despite the warnings, the student demonstrators voted almost unanimously to stay at the encampment, which has been ongoing for two weeks. They were seen marching on the quad after the deadline had passed, chanting slogans in support of their cause.
The university had partially cleared the encampment to make space for the upcoming commencement ceremony, but protesters remained on the perimeters. One student, David Lederer, waved an Israeli flag in a show of solidarity with the university’s decision not to divest from Israel.

Despite the stalemate in negotiations, small movements toward a resolution were observed. Shafik mentioned the university’s willingness to make investments in health and education in Gaza as a potential way to end the crisis.
