This move aims to facilitate smoother transfers of files between Android devices and Apple products, like iPhones and iPads, by utilizing features similar to Apple’s AirDrop.
To initiate a file transfer between an Android device and an Apple gadget, the Apple user must first adjust their AirDrop settings to accept files from “Everyone for 10 minutes.” From there, the Android user can select Quick Share on their device and choose the Apple device they want to send files to. It’s essential for the Apple recipient to accept the incoming transfer to complete the process.
The rollout of this feature is currently underway, with Google expecting to make it fully accessible in a phased manner over the coming weeks. Users with a Pixel 9 will need to ensure they have the Quick Share Extension installed to make use of this feature. This can be done easily by navigating through the Settings app to the System services section, checking for available updates, and selecting the Quick Share Extension for installation.
Unlike some third-party sharing solutions, Google has implemented this cross-platform functionality with a strong focus on security and privacy. The file transfers occur through a direct, peer-to-peer connection. This means data is not routed through any server, ensuring that shared content is not logged, and no additional user data is collected.
