Police arrested a fellow employee after gunfire erupted in the lobby, while more than 100 elderly residents escaped injury.
LOS ANGELES, CA — Three employees were wounded Monday when a co-worker opened fire inside a South Los Angeles senior living facility, leaving one victim in critical condition before police took the suspected gunman into custody, authorities said.
The shooting was reported shortly before 11 a.m. at Progressive Home for the Elderly in the 7000 block of Denver Avenue. Los Angeles police said the three people who were shot were all employees of the facility. Two victims were listed in stable condition, while a third remained in critical condition after being taken to a hospital.
Officers reached the six-story building within about two minutes of the initial call and found the wounded workers in the lobby, according to police officials. The report was treated as a possible active-shooter incident as officers entered the building and began searching for the person responsible. Police later located the suspect elsewhere inside the facility and took him into custody without an exchange of gunfire.
Police described the suspect as a man in his 60s who also worked at the senior living facility. Authorities had not publicly released his name as of Tuesday morning. Investigators also had not announced a motive or explained what led to the shooting. Several local reports described the employee as a longtime custodian or maintenance worker, but police had not publicly detailed his job duties.
A handgun believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered at the scene, Los Angeles Police Department officials said. Detectives were expected to interview employees and the suspect as they worked to determine what happened before the gunfire began. Police said there was no continuing threat to the public after the arrest.
The victims included a man in his 60s and two women, according to police. Authorities said the women were in their 40s and older adulthood, although initial news reports differed on the exact age range of one of them. Their names had not been released. Officials also had not identified which of the three victims was in critical condition.
No residents of the senior facility were injured. Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, whose district includes the area, said the building is home to more than 100 elderly residents. Police said residents remained sheltered inside during the response and were accounted for after officers secured the building.
Witness accounts reported by local news organizations said the shooting followed an interaction involving the employee and other staff members in the lobby. Authorities had not confirmed the precise sequence that preceded the gunfire, and investigators had not announced whether any workplace dispute or other conflict was considered a motive.
The shooting brought a large police and emergency response to the area around Denver Avenue as officers searched the building and paramedics transported the wounded. Authorities said no additional employees, residents or responding officers were injured. The suspect remained in custody Tuesday, and police had not announced additional arrests. The conditions of the two stable victims had not been reported to have worsened, while the critically injured employee remained hospitalized in the latest confirmed public reports.
