Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo Suspended 2 Games for Violating NFL Policy – What Happens Next?

Las Vegas, Nevada – Jimmy Garoppolo, the quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, has been suspended for two games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, sources familiar with the matter told ESPN. The violation is reportedly related to Garoppolo using a prescribed medication without a valid therapeutic use exemption from the league, according to sources.

Garoppolo has decided not to appeal the suspension and will consequently miss the first two games of the 2024 season. However, it is expected that he will not be with the Raiders for those games, sources added. The Raiders are anticipated to release Garoppolo before mid-March when he is due to receive an $11.25 million roster bonus.

Garoppolo, 32, signed a three-year, $72.75 million contract with the Raiders less than a year ago. With a new head coach and general manager in place, the team seems inclined to move on from Garoppolo and add another quarterback in the upcoming draft. It is rumored that Las Vegas may even consider trading up from its current No. 13 pick to secure a potential franchise quarterback.

If released, Garoppolo will be seeking his third team in as many seasons, having previously played for the San Francisco 49ers before joining the Raiders in 2023. Despite the suspension, he will be allowed to participate in all offseason team activities and training camp. However, once the regular season commences, he will be barred from his new team for two weeks due to the suspension.
