Retirement: Lexi Thompson Announces Retirement from Full-Time Golf After 2024 Season

Jersey City, New Jersey – American golfer Lexi Thompson has decided to retire from full-time golf after the conclusion of the 2024 LPGA season. The announcement comes just days before the commencement of the U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania. Thompson, a seasoned professional at 29 years old, has had an impressive career, making her mark on the golfing world with 15 wins globally since turning pro in 2010.

Thompson’s retirement announcement follows a recent trend in her performance on the tour, where she has had mixed results. While achieving a T16 finish and a T3 finish in some events, she has also struggled, missing four of her last five cuts, including the previous three tournaments leading up to the U.S. Women’s Open. Despite this, Thompson’s legacy in golf is secured with numerous accomplishments, including being the youngest golfer to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open at just 12 years old in 2007.

One of Thompson’s major victories came in the 2014 Chevron Championship, the highlight of her career alongside her 11 LPGA wins, starting with the Navistar LPGA Classic in 2011. She has also represented the United States in the Solheim Cup six times, claiming victory in 2015 and 2017, as well as competing in the U.S. Olympic teams in both 2016 and 2021.

In a notable moment for women’s golf, Thompson made history by becoming the seventh woman to compete in a PGA Tour event at the Shriners Children’s Open last October. Although she narrowly missed the cut by two strokes, her participation marked a significant milestone in the sport. As Thompson reflects on her retirement, she leaves behind a lasting legacy in the world of golf, with fans eagerly awaiting her final appearances on the tour before she transitions to a new chapter in her career.
