Delray, Florida – The Food and Drug Administration issued a recall of cucumbers due to potential contamination with Salmonella, a bacteria that can cause serious infections in vulnerable populations. Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. of Delray, Florida initiated the recall after a product sample tested positive for Salmonella, prompting concerns about public health and safety.
The cucumbers in question were distributed to wholesalers and distributors in 14 states between May 17th and May 21st, 2024. These states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Consumers are advised to check with their local grocers to determine if they purchased any of the recalled cucumbers. While the FDA reassures that it is unlikely the affected produce made it to grocery store shelves, the agency continues to investigate any potential connections to ongoing outbreaks.
Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning can include bloody diarrhea, fever over 102 degrees Fahrenheit, excessive vomiting, signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth and dizziness, and stomach cramps. These symptoms typically manifest between six hours and six days after exposure, with most individuals recovering within a week.
However, certain demographic groups, such as young children and the elderly, may experience more severe symptoms that necessitate medical attention. It is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and seek medical care if they exhibit any of the aforementioned symptoms after consuming potentially contaminated produce.
