TOKYO, Japan – Tragedy struck the Japanese navy over the weekend as two SH-60K helicopters carrying eight crew members crashed into the Pacific Ocean during a nighttime training exercise, possibly colliding with each other. Following the incident, one crew member was pronounced dead, leaving rescuers to search for the remaining seven missing individuals.
Defense Minister Minoru Kihara revealed that the helicopters, each carrying four crew members, lost contact near Torishima island, located 370 miles south of Tokyo. While the exact cause of the crash remains unknown, authorities believe the two helicopters may have collided before plunging into the water.
In light of the distressing event, Japan’s defense ministry announced the immediate suspension of training flights for all SH-60s until further notice. Navy Chief of Staff Adm. Efforts to locate the missing crew members escalated on Sunday, with the Maritime Self-Defense Force and Air Self-Defense Force mobilizing 12 warships and seven aircraft for search and rescue operations. U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, expressed solidarity with Japan and offered assistance in the search and rescue operations. The tragic incident involved modified SH-60K helicopters, known as Seahawks, which were developed by Sikorsky and manufactured in Japan by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. These aircraft are primarily deployed for anti-submarine warfare but also serve various other roles, including search and rescue missions.
The crash is reminiscent of previous aviation accidents in Japan’s military history, underlining the inherent risks associated with training exercises.
