PITTSBURGH, PA – Pittsburgh International Airport and the Transportation Security Administration have announced new measures to accommodate the surge in early morning travelers. These changes, set to take effect next month, aim to address overcrowding issues at security checkpoints between 4 and 7 a.m. on weekdays due to increased demand from additional flights.
To alleviate congestion, TSA is advising passengers with early morning flights to arrive at the airport at least 2-3 hours prior to their departure. Starting on July 8, during the peak hours of 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays, an alternate security checkpoint will be designated exclusively for travelers enrolled in TSA PreCheck, with the PreCheck lanes at the main checkpoint closed during those hours. This adjustment is expected to streamline the screening process and reduce waiting times at both checkpoints.
The decision to implement these changes follows a recent travel alert issued by Pittsburgh International Airport regarding long security lines, reflecting a nationwide trend of heightened TSA security measures amid busy summer travel seasons. Signs will be posted within the terminal to inform passengers of the new procedures, with TSA PreCheck passengers directed to the alternate checkpoint for expedited screening. However, CLEAR passengers will still be required to use the main checkpoint.
TSA has observed a significant increase in travel volume in recent months, with a record-breaking nearly 3 million travelers screened nationwide last Saturday, marking the busiest day in the agency’s 22-year history. With expectations to screen over 30 million passengers from June 27 through July 8, representing a 5% increase from the previous Independence Day, TSA is working diligently to manage the surge in passenger traffic efficiently.
