Trenton, New Jersey – Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey is set to resign on August 20, following his conviction on July 16 for accepting bribes from three businessmen. The bribes, which included cash, gold bars, and a luxury car, were in exchange for his assistance in securing deals with foreign officials and obstructing various criminal investigations in New Jersey.
The decision to step down comes after a jury in Manhattan federal court found Menendez guilty on 16 felony charges, including bribery, extortion, and acting as a foreign agent for Egypt. The longtime Democratic lawmaker’s spokesman, Joshua Natoli, declined to comment on the matter.
Menendez, who did not testify during his trial, is scheduled to be sentenced on October 29 and has expressed plans to appeal the decision. If the appeal is unsuccessful, he could face a lengthy prison sentence for his involvement in the bribery scheme.
The case against Menendez also implicated two New Jersey businessmen, Fred Daibes and Wael “Will” Hana, who were convicted alongside the senator. Menendez’s wife, Nadine Menendez, who was portrayed as the mastermind behind the scandal to support her lavish lifestyle, has been indicted but her trial date remains uncertain as she undergoes treatment for advanced breast cancer.
Following his indictment last year, Menendez chose to forgo seeking the Democratic nomination for the 2024 election and instead ran as an independent. His decision to resign was met with immediate calls from Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, and Senator Jack Reed for him to step down.
Throughout his nearly 20-year political career, Menendez has faced various controversies, from an ethics complaint in 2006 to unsubstantiated claims of involvement with underage sex workers in 2012. Despite these challenges, he has remained a prominent figure in New Jersey politics, even playing a significant role in crafting the Affordable Care Act and leading the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
