Severe Thunderstorm Alert Issued for Massachusetts Friday: When to Expect Rain and How to Stay Safe

Boston, Massachusetts – Meteorologists are predicting severe thunderstorms in Massachusetts on Friday afternoon and evening, prompting the WBZ-TV Weather Team to issue a NEXT Weather Alert.

A line of heavy downpours and thunderstorms is expected to reach western Massachusetts around noon and slowly progress eastward, reaching central Massachusetts by 4 p.m. The evening commute, particularly between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., may see the most intense activity, especially to the north and west of Boston, with a heightened risk of severe thunderstorms.

Areas to the north and west of Boston have been placed under a “marginal” risk for severe weather by the Storms Prediction Center on Friday. Following sunset, the storms are anticipated to move slowly eastward towards the coastline, with a stabilizing atmosphere in eastern Massachusetts leading to a weakening trend in the storm line.

Overnight, a cold front will move sluggishly, resulting in lingering clouds and showers in parts of eastern Massachusetts. Saturday morning may begin with some lingering showers along the coastline, particularly in southeastern Massachusetts, before skies clear up.

While the severe weather outbreak is not expected to be high-end in New England, localized flooding and potential damaging wind gusts are possible beneath the stronger storm cells, mainly in the northern and western areas of Boston.

Looking ahead to Father’s Day, once the showers clear out on Saturday morning, the weekend weather is forecasted to be excellent, with plenty of sunshine, dry conditions, and temperatures in the 70s – perfect for outdoor activities like golfing, barbequing, or any celebrations planned for Dad.
