The storms are anticipated to progress towards the east and northeast, passing through towns like Rockville, Olney, and Columbia in the next hour or so. There is a likelihood that storms may develop sporadically as they move towards the south of the District, and there is a chance that the line of storms from the north could extend further south.
A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued and will remain in effect until 9 p.m. as a cold front makes its way across the region, raising the potential for strong and severe storms throughout the evening. The storms could bring heavy downpours, lightning, and possibly hail, posing a threat particularly to areas west of Interstate 95 before 6 p.m., and east of the interstate between 5 and 9 p.m.
Areas within the watch zone, spanning from Virginia Beach to Philadelphia, including cities like Richmond and Baltimore, should remain vigilant as the storms may intensify east of Interstate 95. Remember, a severe thunderstorm watch indicates that conditions are favorable for the formation of potent storms, while a warning signifies that a dangerous storm is imminent and immediate action is required.
