In separate attacks, a 21-year-old man from Ohio was bitten on the foot while playing football in shallow waters at Florida’s New Smyrna Beach, while four individuals encountered a shark off South Padre Island in Texas.
According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, two of the individuals in Texas were bitten, while another person sustained injuries while attempting to assist. The victims were taken to a nearby medical center for treatment, with one needing to be flown out for further care. Despite the frightening encounters, authorities emphasized that such shark incidents are rare in Texas and are often cases of mistaken identity as sharks search for food.
Reports indicate that multiple shark-related incidents were reported at South Padre Island, with authorities suspecting the involvement of the same shark in each case.
