Batavia, New York – A tragic incident occurred at Batavia Downs, a casino and hotel located about 35 miles west of Rochester, when a veteran Genesee County Sheriff’s Sergeant, Thomas Sanfratello, lost his life while on a special assignment. The unfortunate event unfolded early on a Sunday morning when an unruly patron attacked him.
Sgt. Sanfratello, a dedicated law enforcement officer with 32 years of experience, was responding to a fight at the casino when the situation escalated. Security staff at the establishment were escorting two individuals, Michael Elmore and Lyndsey Jean Wilcox, out of the building when a scuffle erupted.
In the midst of the chaos, Sanfratello managed to gain control and apprehend Wilcox. However, Elmore turned violent and assaulted the sergeant and other officers on the scene. Despite efforts to revive him, Sanfratello tragically passed away at the casino.
The Batavia Police Department expressed their condolences to Sanfratello’s family and colleagues during this challenging time. Chief Shawn Heubusch conveyed his thoughts and prayers, acknowledging the immense loss felt by the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.
Sanfratello began his career in law enforcement as a dispatcher in 1992, eventually rising through the ranks to become a deputy sheriff in 1996 and a sergeant in 2007. His dedication and service to the community were commendable, leaving a lasting impact on his colleagues and the community.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway, with the Batavia Police Department collaborating with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Genesee County District Attorney’s Office, and Batavia Downs. Authorities urge any witnesses or individuals with video footage of the altercation to come forward and assist in the investigation.
Following the tragic event, the casino was temporarily evacuated and closed but has since reopened its doors to the public. The community mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant, highlighting the risks and sacrifices that law enforcement officers face in the line of duty.
