Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Two individuals were shot following a Ramadan event attended by approximately 1,000 people at 47th Street and Girard Avenue in West Philadelphia’s Parkside neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon, as reported by local authorities. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel disclosed that law enforcement has detained five individuals, including one juvenile.
Bethel stated that a 15-year-old was wounded by police officers who arrived at the scene and was subsequently transported to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Additionally, a 22-year-old sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. Both the 15-year-old and 22-year-old victims are reportedly in stable condition.
Sadly, a child in the vicinity of the shooting was accidentally struck by a police car responding to the scene, resulting in a broken leg, according to Bethel. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is en route to aid the Philadelphia Police Department and other local partners in the investigative process, confirmed a spokesperson. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Philadelphia Field Division is also providing assistance at the scene of the shooting.
In response to the incident, Senator Bob Casey mentioned that his office is coordinating with local officials to gather more information on the shooting. Parents seeking to reunite with their children can meet with authorities at Sister Clara Muhammad School at 47th Street and Wyalusing Avenue.
