Jayden Miller, 16, was killed at a Clayton County apartment complex as police continued investigating the shooting and searching for answers.
CLAYTON COUNTY, GA — A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot at a Clayton County apartment complex after what his family described as a play fight involving friends, with his sister saying she was told the alleged shooter was trying to impress his girlfriend.
Jayden Miller died after the shooting at the Oak Run Apartments on Main Street on Oct. 20. His sister, Gabbi Hood Miller, told WSB-TV that another friend who was present said Jayden and a friend went outside to play fight before a gunshot was heard. The family’s account of why the confrontation happened has not been independently confirmed by police.
Clayton County police are investigating the killing, but authorities had not publicly identified a suspect or announced an arrest in the latest available reports. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that police were searching for a gunman who fled into nearby woods after Miller was shot. Investigators had not publicly explained what led to the confrontation or confirmed the family’s account that the fight was connected to an effort to impress a girlfriend.
Hood Miller told WSB-TV that a friend who was with the group described what happened before her brother was found on the ground. She said the person involved in the fight had been a friend of Jayden’s. The sister also said the family had been told there was a warrant for the person believed responsible, but Clayton County police told the station they could not confirm whether a warrant had been issued.
Other reporting described the encounter as a physical fight that escalated when someone produced a firearm. Hood Miller called the shooting “senseless” in an interview with FOX 5 Atlanta and questioned why a gun was brought into a fight. Police had not released details establishing who possessed the weapon before the shooting or publicly identified the person investigators believe fired it.
Miller’s relatives gathered at the apartment complex after his death and appealed for information that could help investigators. His cousin, Shakira Terry, told FOX 5 Atlanta that the family was concerned about young people having easy access to guns. Relatives said they hoped the circumstances surrounding Miller’s death would lead others to recognize the consequences of bringing firearms into disputes.
Family members remembered Miller as a helpful teenager who did yard work for neighbors and enjoyed anime. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that he was preparing to attend Job Corps, while his sister told WSB-TV that he had plans involving trade school in North Carolina. Other family accounts said he hoped to become a mechanic.
The killing came as the family was already grieving the recent death of Miller’s mother. Hood Miller said she was now facing life without both her mother and younger brother. Relatives planned to return Miller’s body to North Carolina, where the family is from, so he could be buried near his mother. A fundraiser was established to help with funeral and transportation expenses.
Accounts published in the days after the shooting differed on whether Miller was shot early Tuesday morning or Tuesday night. Authorities had not publicly clarified the precise time in the latest reports reviewed. That discrepancy, along with the circumstances that led to the fight and the identity of the shooter, remained unresolved publicly.
As of the latest available reporting, no suspect had been publicly named and no arrest had been announced. Clayton County police continued to investigate Miller’s death while his family sought information about the shooting and prepared to return him to North Carolina for burial.
