Six killed in stabbing spree

SYDNEY, AU – A tragic incident unfolded in Sydney, Australia on Saturday, resulting in the death of six individuals, including the assailant who was fatally shot by a police officer. The gruesome episode took place at Westfield Bondi Junction, a six-tiered shopping center in the city.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb confirmed during a press briefing that the victims included four women and one man who lost their lives at the shopping complex, while another woman succumbed to her injuries at a hospital. Eight other individuals are currently receiving medical treatment for various injuries sustained during the attack.

Among the injured was a nine-month-old baby who has undergone surgery. Webb stated that the crime scene investigation is ongoing and is expected to continue for several days.

The assailant, a 40-year-old man, was known to the police, according to Webb. While his identity is yet to be officially confirmed, the police do not believe the incident was terror-related. Webb reassured the public that there is no further risk as the sole perpetrator is now deceased.

Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke provided further details, stating that the officer who shot the attacker was alone at the time. The officer had pursued the assailant to the fifth level of the mall where he turned and threatened her with a knife, prompting her to discharge her firearm.

Witnesses at the scene recounted the harrowing incident, with one describing how he and his brother helped attend to the injured baby and mother before they were transported to an ambulance. An eyewitness also reported seeing a baby with stab wounds being taken to an ambulance.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear at this time. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as a “horrific act of violence” and expressed the nation’s deepest condolences to those affected.
