Spinoff TV Series Inspired by Reese Witherspoon’s Legally Blonde in Development at Amazon MGM Studios

Los Angeles, California – Reese Witherspoon is set to bring back the iconic Legally Blonde franchise to television screens in a new spinoff series. With her production company Hello Sunshine, the actress is partnering with Amazon MGM Studios to develop this new project, sources familiar with the matter revealed.

One of the spinoffs, spearheaded by Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, is currently in the works. The premise of this project is being kept under wraps as it progresses through development. Fake Empire, Hello Sunshine, and Marc Platt, the producer of the Legally Blonde films, are collaborating on this venture.

Additionally, there are discussions to expand the Legally Blonde universe with a potential second spinoff series, although details are still in the early stages of ideation.

Legally Blonde, originating from the MGM library, was among several titles earmarked for development following Amazon’s acquisition of the studio. Teaming up with Witherspoon was a strategic move to leverage this intellectual property.

The original Legally Blonde film, released in 2001, starred Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a Harvard Law student, who became a cultural phenomenon and catapulted Witherspoon to stardom. Sequels followed in 2003 and 2009, with a potential series spinoff that evolved from a direct-to-video project. A third film, Legally Blonde 3, co-written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, has been in development for some time.

Schwartz and Savage, known for their work on series like Nancy Drew, City On Fire, and the Gossip Girl reboot, are attached to this new Legally Blonde project. Hello Sunshine, having previously produced the acclaimed Daisy Jones & the Six limited series for Amazon Prime Video, is also involved.

Witherspoon, represented by CAA and attorney Gretchen Rush, is affiliated with LBI Entertainment in addition to her work with Hello Sunshine. This endeavor marks a significant step for Witherspoon in revisiting a beloved franchise in a new light.
