Storms pounding Texas trigger historic flooding; homes damaged, residents rescued in major evacuations due to intense rains and rising river levels

Livingston, Texas – Flooding in Texas is escalating due to severe storms and heavy rains, causing widespread damage and necessitating evacuations. The recent storms are part of a series of extreme weather events that have been hammering the state since early April, including tornadoes, large hail, and record-breaking rainfall. The situation has become critical, with some areas experiencing rainfall levels not seen since the devastating floods of Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

Communities north of Houston have seen nearly two months’ worth of rain in just a single day, leading to submerged roadways and overflowing rivers. In Walker County, the floods have been labeled historic, surpassing the impact of Hurricane Harvey, according to Sherri Pegoda, the deputy emergency management coordinator.

Walker County faced significant challenges, with two communities submerged along the Trinity River accessible only by high-water vehicles. Nearly all roads in the county were underwater, with numerous major washouts and compromised bridges. The county has conducted at least 42 high-water rescues since late April.

In Polk County, around 700 homes have been flooded, prompting mandatory evacuations for 1,000 homes in the area. The flooding threat remains high, with emergency management officials warning that additional rainfall could lead to further rises in flood levels.

Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of disaster in over a third of Texas counties, expanding storm-related declarations due to the ongoing flooding. The situation is exacerbated by the excessive rainfall in eastern Texas over the past few weeks, making many areas highly susceptible to flash floods and river overflow.

The worst flooding is concentrated in southeastern Texas, with numerous river gauges showing major flood stages. The continued heavy rainfall has put several areas on alert for potential record-breaking floods, reminiscent of the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey.

In addition to flooding, severe thunderstorms have been spawning tornadoes across Texas, with reports of tornadoes near Abilene leading to significant damage to homes and injuries. The impact of the storms has been severe, with communities like Hawley reeling from the destruction caused by the powerful tornadoes.

The state remains on high alert as the threat of more severe weather persists, highlighting the urgent need for preparedness and response measures to mitigate the impacts of the ongoing natural disasters in Texas.
