Subway surfing accident leaves 1 teen dead, 1 injured

BRONX, NY – Two teens were severely injured, one of whom lost his life, in a perilous trend of subway surfing in the Bronx, New York, on a Friday morning. This deadly misadventure recorded the latest casualties in an ongoing trend.

A 13-year-old boy fell off a moving 6-train between Westchester Square and Middletown Road stations in Pelham at around 9 a.m., resulting in fatal injuries. He was discovered unconscious beneath the elevated tracks. The arrival of emergency medical personnel confirmed his death at the scene.

The earlier incident involved a 15-year-old boy critically wounded while subway surfing on another 6-train negotiating the Morris Ave.-Soundview station in Soundview. He was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where he is currently in a critical state.

These horrifying events follow a similar one that happened earlier in the week, where a 14-year-old boy sustained severe injuries while subway surfing in Queens. He collided with a beam arriving at the 111th Street Station, leaving him in a stable condition at Elmhurst Hospital.

These daredevil stunts, often recorded and posted on social media, have emerged as a hazardous fad among thrill-seeking teenagers. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) records indicate an alarming rise in the instances of unauthorized individuals riding outside or on top of trains. The figure soared from 262 cases for the first six months of 2019 to a staggering 450 during the same period in 2023.
