DEER PARK, NY — A 19-year-old Amityville man pleaded not guilty after authorities accused him of driving while impaired by drugs, running a stop sign and crashing a Mercedes-Benz through the front of a Long Island home early Sunday morning.
Matthew Troche was driving south on Cayuga Avenue at about 4:45 a.m. Aug. 30 when the Mercedes ran the stop sign at its intersection with Nicolls Road and struck the Deer Park house, according to Suffolk County police. No one inside the home was injured. Police later charged Troche with driving while ability impaired by drugs and two weapons offenses.
The Mercedes crossed onto the property and crashed through part of the house before coming to rest inside the living room, according to police and published reports. Emergency responders arriving at the scene found the vehicle entirely inside the room, with the car resting on a couch. The Deer Park Fire Department and Suffolk County police responded.
Troche was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital with injuries that police described as not life-threatening. He was treated and released before being arrested. Authorities have not publicly identified what substance they allege caused his impairment.
Police said investigators also found Troche in possession of a handgun and a high-capacity magazine. He was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon in addition to the impaired-driving charge. Authorities have not released further details about the firearm or explained where it was found.
Homeowners Sheri and Joe Wilkonski told News 12 that they were asleep when the crash woke them. Their son was also inside the house, but no family members were hurt. The homeowners said their cat initially disappeared after the crash but was later found hiding in the basement.
Troche was arraigned Monday in First District Court in Central Islip and pleaded not guilty to the charges, News 12 reported. His attorney declined to comment to the television station. A judge set bail at $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond.
The charges against Troche are allegations, and he has not been convicted. Suffolk County police have not publicly released additional information about the suspected drug impairment or announced further charges in connection with the crash.
