Teen with multiple prior arrests charged with murder and assault

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA – A fatal road rage incident has occurred in Gwinnett County, Georgia, resulting in one death and one injury. The incident took place at a bustling intersection known for street racing and ended in a residential area, the Durham Ridge subdivision. The violent episode involved two vehicles and three individuals, one of whom was arrested.

The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Luis Cruz, is believed to have been involved in a shootout with the occupants of another vehicle. The incident was captured on a local resident’s security camera, which recorded several gunshots. Uriel Mejia, the resident who provided the footage, witnessed the event from his window. He described seeing the driver suddenly brandish a firearm and open fire.

The Lilburn Police Department, who responded to the incident, confirmed that both parties were armed and had exchanged gunfire. “This was a mutual combat situation,” stated Capt. Scott Bennett of the Lilburn Police Department. One of the vehicles involved was a black SUV, whose driver was killed in the incident. A passenger in the same vehicle was injured and subsequently hospitalized.

The driver of the second vehicle, later identified as Cruz, initially fled the scene. However, police later received a call from Cruz’s uncle, who informed them that his nephew was ready to surrender. Cruz was subsequently taken into custody.

Cruz’s criminal record reveals multiple arrests over the past year, including charges for driving on an expired license, DUI, and street racing. In relation to the recent road rage incident, Cruz faces charges of felony murder and aggravated assault. He is currently being held without bond.

Capt. Bennett expressed his frustration over the incident, stating, “Trivial matters are not settled by violence and gunfire. It’s pointless. It’s senseless, and it has no place in our cities and polite society. People just need to stop, take a deep breath, and move on with their lives.”
