Temtem Devs Announce End of New Content Updates and Removal of Microtransactions – What’s Next for the MMO?

Madrid, Spain – Crema, the developer behind the popular game Temtem, recently announced a significant change in their content development strategy. Following an ongoing debate within the community about the game’s classification as an MMO, Crema revealed that no new islands, creatures (known as Tems), or passes will be introduced after the upcoming 1.7 update. Additionally, all microtransactions in the game will be removed.

The development of Temtem began in 2018 with a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised almost six times the initial goal. The game was pitched as a “massively multiplayer creature collecting adventure,” but the studio clarified that its scope was smaller compared to traditional MMOs. Nevertheless, some players felt that the use of the term MMO led to unrealistic expectations about the game’s long-term future.

The controversy escalated when Crema announced a new game called Temtem: Swarm, which caused concern among some community members that the original Temtem would be neglected. CEO Enrique Paños Montoya’s statement on Discord further fueled the debate, with some players interpreting it as a sign of the series’ abandonment.

In response to the community’s feedback, Crema outlined its future plans for Temtem. The upcoming 1.7 update, scheduled for early June, will introduce a new season, Tamer Pass, and various improvements while eliminating real-money microtransactions. This patch is expected to be the last update with new seasons and Tamer Passes, with the subsequent 1.8 patch focusing on polishing and bug fixes.

One of the reasons cited by Crema for discontinuing new content development was the mismatch between the time invested in creating new content and the players’ consumption rate. The studio also addressed the lack of an offline mode, a feature frequently requested by players, reassuring them that alternative solutions would be explored if the servers were ever taken offline.

The community’s response to Crema’s announcement has been mixed, with some players appreciating the removal of monetization elements and the studio’s transparency, while others remain discontent and demand continued support for Temtem. Despite the backlash, Crema remains committed to delivering on its promises, including the upcoming Arcade Bar feature, which will be introduced alongside the 1.7 update.
