Renton, Washington — The world of tabletop gaming is making waves as a growing number of fans immerse themselves in the nostalgia-fueled realm of Magic: The Gathering, particularly through its latest collaboration with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. As a senior game designer leading the Casual Play Design team, Melissa DeTora plays a pivotal role in this innovative crossover, notably in the design of the Turtle Power! Commander deck.
DeTora’s enthusiasm for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) dates back to her childhood during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Growing up with her younger brother, she fondly recalls collecting an array of TMNT merchandise, from action figures to lunch boxes. “Those days were filled with adventure, watching the cartoon and diving into any TMNT-themed game we could find,” she said, reflecting on a time when the animated heroes captured the imaginations of children everywhere.
Among her cherished memories are the TMNT video games that posed both challenges and thrills. DeTora recalls the difficulty of navigating through levels on the original 8-bit consoles, where tight time limits added an extra layer of excitement. “We’d often find ourselves spending our allowance on arcade machines instead of actually bowling with friends,” she recollected, illustrating the enduring appeal of the franchise.
When tasked with integrating the TMNT universe into a single Commander deck, DeTora faced a unique challenge. The design team had to avoid pitting the beloved Turtles against one another while still capturing the essence of the entire series. After extensive brainstorming, they settled on a five-color deck, each Turtle and their mentor, Splinter, representing a distinct identity within the framework.
To make the Commander deck stand out, the design team drew inspiration from the video games that resonate deeply with TMNT fans. The deck incorporates many nostalgic elements, from electrifying seaweed to the iconic “Pizza time!” lines that harken back to those classic gaming experiences. “We wanted players to feel that nostalgic journey through their favorite TMNT moments,” DeTora stated.
Delving into the mechanics of the deck, the design team aimed to balance flavorful cards with engaging gameplay. They considered various themes, ultimately settling on incorporating +1/+1 counters to represent character growth and leveling up—an important feature in video games. This broad theme permitted flexibility within the five-color composition of the deck while maintaining the energetic spirit of TMNT.
Another significant decision was determining how players could select their commanders. The original concept involved players choosing from multiple Turtles to reflect the character selection seen in arcade games. However, through testing, the design team noted challenges concerning gameplay clarity and adherence to the established Magic rules. After several iterations, they opted to implement a partner mechanic to allow players the option to embrace the whole Turtles dynamic within a structured format.
The deep-rooted lore of TMNT provided rich material for the design, allowing collaborations between characters, bosses, and even items that fans would recognize from their favorite games. “Characters like Bebop and Rocksteady were a natural fit, especially given their history in the franchise,” DeTora explained, highlighting how the visuals tied into nostalgic game experiences while offering something fresh.
As the design process wrapped up, DeTora expressed pride in the resulting deck, which celebrates not only the TMNT legacy but also the joy of gaming itself. “We aim to provide players with an experience that is both fun and reflective of the history we cherish,” she remarked. The Turtle Power! Commander deck invites both seasoned players and newcomers alike to dive into the colorful world of Ninja Turtles, offering a unique blend of nostalgia, strategy, and community engagement.
