Tony Awards 2024: “The Outsiders” Surprises as Best Musical Winner!

NEW YORK CITY – The 2024 Tony Awards took place at the David H. Koch Theater in Lincoln Center on June 16th, where surprising winners emerged in various categories. “The Outsiders” won Best Musical, beating out strong contenders like “Suffs” and “Hell’s Kitchen.” David Adjmi’s play with music, “Stereophonic,” took home the award for Best Play.

The 77th Annual Tony Awards was hosted by Ariana DeBose and aired live on CBS, also streaming on Paramount+ in the United States. “Stereophonic” was the most decorated production of the year, winning five Tonys. This success was closely followed by “The Outsiders” and a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” each receiving four wins.

Other notable winners included “Appropriate,” “Suffs,” and “Hell’s Kitchen,” with three awards each. Despite receiving seven nominations, “Water for Elephants” was shut out, as were “Here Lies Love,” “Mary Jane,” and “Mother Play,” all with four nominations each.

The Tony Awards, produced by Tony Award Productions in collaboration with the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, showcased outstanding performances and talent. Ricky Kirshner, Glenn Weiss, and Jack Sussman were the key figures behind the production.

Among the winners were Justin Peck for Best Choreography in “Illinoise,” and Danya Taymor for Best Direction of a Musical for “The Outsiders.” Shaina Taub’s work on “Suffs” earned her the award for Best Original Score written for the theatre. Additionally, standout performances by actors such as Jeremy Strong in “An Enemy of the People” and Sarah Paulson in “Appropriate” were recognized with awards.
