Tel Aviv, Israel – Renowned playwright Tony Kushner recently expressed his support for Jonathan Glazer’s impactful Oscars acceptance speech. Addressing the divisive comments made by some figures in Hollywood regarding Glazer’s speech, Kushner described it as an “unimpeachable, irrefutable statement” during a discussion on the Haaretz Podcast.
Kushner, a four-time Academy Award-nominated screenwriter, highlighted the importance of Glazer’s message in relation to the Israel-Gaza conflict. While in Israel to promote a production of “Angels in America,” Kushner emphasized the need to separate Jewish identity and history from the justification of dehumanizing or slaughtering others.
In response to criticisms that calling for a ceasefire is antisemitic, Kushner defended those advocating for peace, emphasizing their concern for the lives at stake. He condemned the actions of extremists in Netanyahu’s cabinet and questioned the ethics behind what he perceives as ethnic cleansing in the region.
Expressing a desire for Israelis to live peacefully and securely, Kushner criticized the treatment of Palestinians, pointing out the long-standing issues of occupation, imprisonment, and barriers in the region. He underscored the importance of addressing these injustices in order to truly ensure the safety and well-being of all involved.
