Torture Sentence: Mississippi Deputies’ Shocking Racist Attack on Black Men Lands Them Decades Behind Bars

JACKSON, Miss. — In a federal court, two former Mississippi sheriff’s deputies known as the “Goon Squad” were sentenced for their involvement in the torture and abuse of two Black men. Brett Morris McAlpin, 53, received a sentence of over 27 years, while Joshua Hartfield, 32, was ordered to serve about 10 years. These individuals were part of a group of six former deputies who admitted to subjecting Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker to acts of racist torture.

The severity of the crimes committed by McAlpin and Hartfield was emphasized by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, who stated that they would now face significant prison time for their heinous actions. McAlpin pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including conspiracy against rights, obstruction of justice, and deprivation of rights under the color of law. The “Goon Squad” was notorious for their excessive use of force.

The incident occurred when McAlpin received a call regarding Jenkins and Parker residing with a white woman. Without a warrant, the group led by McAlpin and Hartfield went to the house and subjected the two men to horrific acts of violence, including the use of stun guns, racial slurs, and even firing a gun as a form of intimidation.

Federal Judge Tom S. Lee handed down sentences to the other members of the group, with Dedmon receiving 40 years and Opdyke 17.5 years. The victims, Jenkins and Parker, shared their statements expressing the trauma they endured and the impact it had on their lives. Despite apologies from some of the defendants, the judge acknowledged the severity of their actions and the lasting effects on the victims and their families.

The courtroom proceedings were emotional, with both victims and defendants expressing their perspectives on the traumatic events that transpired. While some defendants expressed remorse for their actions, the judge highlighted the gravity of their participation in such egregious acts. The sentencing aimed to bring justice to the victims and send a stern message regarding the consequences of such racially motivated crimes.
