Tourist Tragedy: American Found Dead on Greek Island Amid Heatwave Havoc – US State Department Contacted

Greece is currently facing a tragic series of events during a record-breaking heatwave on the Greek islands. Recently, the body of an American tourist was discovered on the small island of Mathraki, adding to the list of foreigners either missing or found deceased in the scorching temperatures. This incident follows the passing of a Dutchman on Samos and the loss of British TV presenter Dr. Michael Mosley on Symi.

The American tourist found on Mathraki, a 55-year-old man, had last been seen alive in a bar on the small island. Greek authorities reported that his body was found on a deserted beach, and it has been transferred to a hospital on the nearby island of Corfu for further examination. Alongside this unfortunate discovery, at least three others, including the American Albert Calibet, have been reported missing.

The relentless heatwave in Greece has forced the closure of schools and top tourist attractions like the historic Acropolis. The country is currently experiencing its earliest recorded heatwave, attributed to hot winds from North Africa. Authorities are on high alert as temperatures are expected to remain intense throughout the week.

In addition to the American tourist, a 74-year-old Dutch traveler was reported missing and later found deceased after a solo hike on Samos. The search is ongoing for Albert Calibet, a retired police officer from California, who disappeared while hiking on Amorgos. Meanwhile, Greek officials are also combing the island of Sikinos in search of two French women aged 73 and 64.

Earlier this month, the search for Dr. Mosley ended tragically when his body was found on Symi, with investigators determining he passed away of natural causes. The alarming number of missing and deceased individuals during this heatwave highlights the dangers of extreme weather conditions for tourists exploring the picturesque Greek islands.
