Tragic Ending: 30-Year-Old Hiker Found Dead at Carmel Valley Waterfall After Solo Day Hike

Carmel Valley, California – Authorities in Carmel Valley, California discovered the body of a 30-year-old hiker at the base of a waterfall in the Ventana Wilderness after a four-day search. Caroline Meister’s body was found at the base of the waterfall near “Cut Off Trail,” confirming her tragic fate after she embarked on a solo day hike that turned deadly.

Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto stated that based on the physical evidence, they do not suspect foul play in Meister’s death. The sheriff believes it was a tragic accident that led to her demise. A forensic examination is set to be conducted to determine the exact cause of her passing.

Meister, described by her parents as a very experienced and avid hiker, left the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center for her hike on March 18. When she failed to return the same day, center staff contacted the authorities, expressing concerns as she was ill-prepared for an overnight stay in the wilderness. Meister was a familiar face in the area and was living and working at the Zen Center at the time of her death.

The San Francisco Zen Center expressed deep sorrow and shock at the news of Meister’s passing, stating that the community would come together to support one another in this difficult time. The tragic loss has left hearts broken, with 108 bells tolling in mourning for Meister.
