Tragic: One Dead, 21 Injured in Shooting at Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Celebration Rally

A shooting in Kansas City, Missouri, marred the celebrations of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory, resulting in one fatality and up to 21 people injured.

According to Kansas City Fire Chief Ross Grundyson, eight of the injured sustained “immediately life-threatening” injuries, seven had life-threatening injuries, and six suffered minor wounds during the shooting, which occurred around 2 p.m. CT.

While three individuals were detained, the police did not release the identities of any suspects. The victim who lost her life, Lisa Lopez-Galvan, was a DJ at Kansas City radio station KKFI 90.1, where she hosted the show Taste of Tejano.

Authorities have not disclosed the names of the other victims. Children’s Mercy Hospital reported treating 12 victims, most of whom were children with gunshot wounds. Police requested the crowd to evacuate the area to allow for medical assistance for the victims.

The shooting, which took place during a celebratory parade and rally at Union Station, appears to have been criminal in nature, according to a preliminary investigation. While there was no indication of terrorism, three law enforcement officials familiar with the incident said.

Individuals close to the situation, such as linebacker Drue Tranquill and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, expressed their condolences and called for prayers for the victims. The Biden administration also announced that federal law enforcement officials were supporting local law enforcement at the crime scene.

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly was safely evacuated from the celebration. The incident has left the community devastated and is a tragic reminder of the impact of violence on public events.
