Berlin Township, Michigan – A tragic incident at a child’s birthday party left two young siblings dead after a suspected drunken driver crashed into the event over the weekend. The Monroe County prosecutor, Jeff Yorkey, announced that more time is needed to gather information before pressing charges in the case.
The 66-year-old woman reportedly drove into the Swan Creek Boat Club, resulting in the deaths of 8-year-old Alanah Phillips and her 5-year-old brother, Zayn Phillips. The birthday party was attended by children and adults, located approximately 30 miles south of Detroit. Nine individuals, including the children’s mother and another sibling, sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals for treatment.
As of Monday, five people remained in critical or serious condition following the tragic incident. Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the individual being celebrated at the birthday party. The bar where the driver allegedly consumed alcohol was temporarily shut down but reopened the next day.
In response to the devastating event, counselors were made available at Flat Rock schools to support students and faculty in processing their emotions. Superintendent Andrew Brodie expressed condolences on social media, emphasizing the community’s collective grief over the heartbreaking loss.
