Train Derailment Shuts Down Interstate 40 Near Gallup: Hazmat Teams on Scene for Evacuations and Road Closures

GALLUP, N.M. – New Mexico State Police have taken swift action in response to a significant train derailment west of Gallup. The incident occurred close to the border between New Mexico and Arizona, leading to the closure of all lanes of Interstate 40 in the area.

Authorities reported that the derailed train was carrying non-odor propane and gasoline, prompting the issuance of evacuation orders for residences within a two-mile radius of the half-mile marker on Interstate 40. A shelter-in-place location at Lupton Chapter House has been established to ensure the safety of residents in the vicinity.

In light of the situation, traffic has been disrupted, with westbound interstate traffic being halted at mile marker 16, and eastbound traffic in Arizona being stopped at mile marker 333. The impact of the derailment has also caused the closure of several other roads, including State Road 118, Route 12, and County Road 1 in Tseyatoh.

As a result of the ongoing emergency response efforts, Interstate 40 exit 333 has been designated as a detour route using State Road 191 in both directions. Meanwhile, Lupton Road remains closed on the south side, with authorities anticipating an indefinite closure of the interstate until the fire is extinguished and safety concerns are addressed.

Hazmat teams are actively engaged at the scene to provide support, with the incident being classified as a hazardous materials situation by officials from the Apache County Sheriff’s Office. In a strategic approach to managing the crisis, firefighters are refraining from directly combating the flames to mitigate risks effectively.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has released a statement acknowledging the derailment and emphasizing the collaboration among various agencies to ensure the safety of the region. The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation by BNSF officials, who have confirmed that there were no reported injuries.

Given the evolving nature of the situation, individuals are advised to stay informed through official channels for the latest updates. The closure of Interstate 40 is expected to persist until the necessary measures are taken to address the aftermath of the derailment and guarantee public safety.
