Bozen, Italy – A surprising discovery has shaken up the world of paleontology: a supposedly ancient lizard fossil found in the Italian Alps, dating back to 280 million years ago, has turned out to be an elaborate fake. The fossil, known as Tridentinosaurus antiquus, was excavated in 1931 and was once thought to be one of the oldest lizard fossils ever found.
The revelation came after a team of researchers led by paleobiologist Valentina Rossi of University College Cork conducted a detailed analysis of the fossil’s unusual remains. What was thought to be exceptionally preserved soft tissue turned out to be black paint, meticulously applied to mimic the animal’s body outline.
While the discovery is a disappointing one, it does provide a unique insight into the history of paleontology. With modern techniques, researchers were able to uncover the true nature of the fossil, something that would not have been possible a decade ago. And despite the fake skin, parts of the fossil are indeed genuine, providing an opportunity for further study of the real Tridentinosaurus.

Researchers now have the chance to reexamine the site of the fossil’s discovery, in hopes of finding additional specimens in a better state of preservation.
However, one mystery remains unsolved: the identity and motive of the individual who fabricated the fossil. With part of the bones and tiny bony scales visible, it’s clear that someone attempted to enhance the specimen’s appearance. Yet the true reasons behind this deceptive act may never be fully understood.
This research, published in the journal Palaeontology, underscores the importance of meticulous analysis in the field of paleontology and the constant evolution of scientific techniques. While the discovery of the fake fossil was a disappointment, it has opened new doors for further research and exploration in the field.
