**TROOPERS OPEN FIRE: Man Wanted for Vehicle Thefts Killed in Rochester Standoff**

ROCHESTER, N.H. – A man wanted by the police in connection with a series of motor vehicle thefts met a fatal end at the hands of New Hampshire State Police troopers in Rochester. The authorities revealed that Joseph Russell, 36, of Rochester, was fatally shot by the state troopers after brandishing a firearm when a police K9 subdued him.

The Rochester Police Department initiated the search for Russell on Thursday following reports of multiple motor vehicle thefts in Rochester and Lebanon, Maine. Witnesses indicated Russell as armed and dangerous, prompting a widespread investigation by law enforcement.

On the fateful Friday night, Rochester police received a tip about Russell’s presence in the city, leading officers to confront him on Route 16 near Gooseberry Circle. Subsequently, Russell abandoned his vehicle and sought refuge in a nearby neighborhood, sparking a pursuit by officers from the Rochester Police and New Hampshire State Police.

As Russell evaded capture, he defied orders to halt and surrender, leading to the release of a state police K9 to track him down. In a pivotal moment, Russell reportedly drew a firearm, prompting two troopers to open fire, resulting in his death at the scene.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office confirmed that none of the law enforcement officials involved sustained injuries. Additionally, authorities reassured the public that there was no lingering threat following the incident, as the investigation into the shooting was underway.

An autopsy for Russell was scheduled to provide clarity on the events leading to his death. The identities of the troopers responsible for firing at Russell will be disclosed after formal interviews, adhering to standard procedures, investigators stated.
