Police say artwork, jewelry, electronics, documents and two vehicles were taken from the Coral Gables home days after the couple died.
CORAL GABLES, FL — Police arrested a man and woman accused of ransacking the home of a South Florida couple who died days earlier in a helicopter crash in Kenya, taking valuable artwork, jewelry, electronics, documents and two vehicles, according to arrest reports.
Geybert Alexander Garcia, 40, and Melany Perdomo, 24, were arrested Tuesday in connection with the burglary of the home belonging to Henry Parra, 55, and Adam Hlavaty, 42, Coral Gables police said. Parra and Hlavaty were among seven people killed Aug. 19 when a helicopter crashed in northern Kenya. Police said the burglary occurred sometime between Aug. 20 and Aug. 22 and was discovered by the couple’s housekeeper Aug. 23.
Investigators said the Valencia Avenue residence had been ransacked and numerous belongings were missing, including personal and business documents, jewelry, electronics and artwork. A 2023 Range Rover and a 2020 Porsche Taycan were also taken, according to police reports. The reports do not establish whether the suspects knew Parra and Hlavaty had died before the break-in or explain how the home was selected.
Police said investigators received a major lead after a stolen Apple MacBook was electronically tracked to a residence in northwest Miami-Dade County. Location information from the stolen Range Rover also pointed investigators to the same area. Detectives later confirmed the missing vehicles were parked near the residence and obtained a search warrant, according to police.
Coral Gables officers and Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies searched the property Tuesday. Police said Garcia tried to conceal himself in a closet while Perdomo was found in an upstairs bedroom. Investigators said they recovered documents belonging to the victims, the Range Rover’s key fob and several pieces of artwork. Among the recovered property was a sculpture that police said was valued at more than $500,000.
Investigators also reported finding items they said were consistent with producing or altering fraudulent identification documents and personal identifying information. Police said a Ford F-250 at the property had an altered vehicle identification number and had previously been reported stolen in Indian River County. Authorities have not publicly established whether those findings are connected to the burglary of Parra and Hlavaty’s home.
Garcia and Perdomo face multiple felony charges, including burglary and grand theft auto. During a court appearance Wednesday, an attorney for Garcia presented a document that he said gave Garcia permission to possess the vehicles and enter the home. Coral Gables Detective Wilfredo Diaz testified that he believed the document was fraudulent. A family friend of Parra and Hlavaty also disputed the document’s legitimacy and told the court the home had been damaged during the break-in.
Miami-Dade Judge Mindy Glazer found probable cause in the case and ordered Garcia and Perdomo held without bond, according to local reports. The allegations against them have not been proven in court. Perdomo was also listed in jail records as being subject to an immigration hold.
The arrests came less than a week after Parra and Hlavaty died in the Aug. 19 aviation disaster near Mount Ololokwe in Kenya’s Samburu County. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said the Eurocopter EC130 B4 was traveling from the Loisaba area toward Ewaso Nyiro when it crashed at about 9:13 a.m. local time. All six passengers and the pilot died. Kenyan aviation investigators are examining the cause of the crash, which has not been publicly determined.
Others killed in the crash included Miami restaurateur Roger Duarte; José Alberto Suárez, a longtime television executive who led several Telemundo-owned stations in Florida; Michele Sensi-Contugi, director of Ecuador’s National Intelligence Center; Sensi-Contugi’s wife, fashion designer Stephany Hollihan; and pilot Josh Outram. The crash involved travelers with extensive ties to South Florida and prompted tributes from relatives, colleagues and public officials.
Police have not publicly said whether additional suspects are being sought in the Coral Gables burglary or whether all of the property taken from the home has been recovered. Garcia and Perdomo remained in custody as the criminal case moved forward, while the separate investigation into the Kenya helicopter crash continued.
