Two Shot After Atlanta Argument, Police Say

Atlanta police said two people were taken into custody after gunfire broke out along the nightlife corridor.

ATLANTA, GA — Two men were shot early Wednesday on Edgewood Avenue after an argument between two groups turned into gunfire along one of Atlanta’s busiest nightlife strips, police said.

The shooting happened just after 1 a.m. near 357 Edgewood Avenue, a stretch of bars, restaurants and late-night crowds in the Sweet Auburn area. Atlanta police said the case remained preliminary Wednesday, but investigators had reviewed video and witness statements. Two people were taken into custody, and police said charges were pending as detectives continued to sort through the sequence of shots, weapons and people involved.

Police said the violence began as two separate groups walked along Edgewood Avenue. During the argument, a man who was with his girlfriend pulled out a gun, investigators said. Someone from the other group then fired, striking the armed man twice in the chest. Atlanta police said the man’s girlfriend picked up his gun after he was shot and chased people from the other group east along Edgewood Avenue while firing several rounds. A second man was hit in the leg during that gunfire.

Officers who responded found the first wounded man with two gunshot wounds to the chest, police said. The second wounded man was found later with a gunshot wound to the leg. Police did not release their names or conditions Wednesday morning. Investigators said video footage and witness statements showed that the man and woman who first displayed the gun were the primary aggressors. Both were taken into custody. Police said the account could change as new information comes in.

A witness, Sharod Rollins, told Atlanta News First he saw the aftermath outside on Edgewood Avenue. “When I came outside, there were a bunch of police cars surrounding my vehicle,” Rollins said. He said people nearby were trying to understand what had happened and make sure others were safe before paramedics arrived. Video from the scene showed bystanders rushing toward the wounded before emergency crews reached the area.

The shooting added to long-running concern about public safety on Edgewood Avenue, a nightlife corridor that draws crowds from across Atlanta. The area has been the focus of city debate since a July 2025 mass shooting in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood left one person dead and 10 others injured. In that case, police said officers responded around 1:30 a.m. and found 11 people shot near a streetcar stop on Edgewood Avenue.

Earlier this year, the Atlanta City Council backed a safety plan for the corridor after a task force studied crime, traffic, alcohol licensing and blighted properties in the area. The plan called for better signs to limit illegal parking and cruising, more security cameras and possible changes to how the city handles new liquor licenses. It also raised longer-term ideas, including ambassadors to help businesses follow city rules and a stronger city presence focused on nightlife compliance.

Business owners along Edgewood Avenue said Wednesday that the latest shooting strengthened their push for a coordinated safety plan. Cyrei Daniel, an Edgewood business owner and president of the newly formed Historic King District Business Association, said the group has nearly 50 members. “There was an incident that happened, unfortunately in front of a local business, but actually it wasn’t a part of that local business,” Daniel said. He said the group wants local businesses, residents and police working more closely when trouble starts.

Police had not announced final charges by Wednesday afternoon. The investigation remained open, and officials said the facts could change as detectives review more footage, witness accounts and evidence from the scene.
